FC Barcelona star, Lionel Messi, has opened his La Liga campaign with a brace against Elche.
Despite playing more than one half with ten men due to a Mascherano red card, Messi scored two goals in the comfortable 3-0 win at home.
The Argentine looked as sharp as ever and it seems new Barcelona coach, Luis Enrique, has found the right system to make his superstar shine.
It was the fifth consecutive season in which Messi scored on the season opener and a record-breaking fourth consecutive brace in the first game of the campaign.
With 245 goals in 278 La Liga games, the 27-year-old is also only six goals short of Telmo Zarra’s all-time record of 251 goals.
As Messi has never scored less than 10 goals in a season since 2006/07, it seems that the record is about to fall, if he stays injury free.
Messi has won both the ‘Pichichi’ trophy for La Liga’s best goal scorer as well as the European Golden Boot four times, but his best season came in 2011/12 when he scored astonishing 73 goals in all competitions.
