FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has explained how he feels about being a substitute on occasion at the Catalan club.
The Argentine has been named among the substitutes in Barca's past two UEFA Champions League matches, a spot he has not had to get used to since his breakout season in Barca's senior side when he was just 17 years old.
However, the 30-year-old has insisted he understands how important rest is as the constant game time take its toll on his body more now than in his younger days as a footballer.
"I have come to understand that the season is long and that some periods are more important than others," he explained during an interview with TyC Sports.
"Years ago, my body didn't feel it but now it starts to feel the strain.
"Of course, it is tough being a sub, but I have come to understand it is for the best."
Messi has been in great form for the Blaugrana so far this season, scoring 17 goals and assisting a further six strikes in 22 matches.
