Messi Has Never Scored In Barca’s UCL Exits, CR7 Shines Even On Bad Days

With Lionel Messi once again failing to score in FC Barcelona's shocking UEFA Champions League exit on Tuesday, he has, in fact, never scored in ties the Blaugrana were eliminated in, while Cristiano Ronaldo seems to step it up on bad days.

The Argentine did not score in both legs of the Catalans' 4-4 aggregate defeat (on away goals) to AS Roma – a negative record that has seemingly been a common trend during his career.

He also failed to score in Barca's 3-0 elimination against Juventus in the quarter-finals last season, and did not find the back of the net in their 3-2 exit at the same stage against Atletico Madrid the year before.

The 2014/15 campaign was the last time Barcelona and Messi lifted the coveted title, but in their three knockouts in the previous years (2-1 loss against Atletico, 7-0 drubbing by Bayern Munich and 3-2 defeat to Chelsea), Messi was not to be found on the scoresheet.

He did, though, win the trophy with Barcelona in 2005/06, 2008/09 and 2010/11. However, in the Catalans' Champions League exits in 2006/07 against Liverpool, the following season against Manchester United, and in 2009/10 against Inter Milan, Messi once again failed to score.

On the other hand, Ronaldo, who has won three of the past four editions of the tournament with Real Madrid, did score in his side's most recent Champions League exits.

Back in 2014/15, the Portuguese struck both goals in his side's 3-2 elimination by Juventus, while in 2013/14 he scored once in Real's 4-3 aggregate loss to Borussia Dortmund, and in 2012/13 he found the back of the net twice in a defeat on penalties against Bayern, after the aggregate score over the two ties was 3-3.

In his first Champions League campaign with Los Blancos, Ronaldo scored the only goal in a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Olympique Lyon, and also scored once for Manchester United in a 5-3 elimination by AC Milan back in 2006/07.

Overall, both players have lifted the trophy four times, and are currently the top two goalscorers in the competition. However, Ronaldo seems to shine even when his side is on the losing end, having scored seven times in Champions League exits, while Messi is yet to find the back of the net on a rainy UCL night for Barca.
