Despite winning just one trophy in the 2018/19 campaign and having an average Copa America, FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is still tipped by a certain footballing great to win this year's Ballon d'Or.
Although the Argentine has put in some magnificent displays for the Catalan club over the past year, many wonder if his chances of winning the prize have been damaged due to Barca's failure to win the UEFA Champions League, and his average Copa America.
Ex-Blaugrana superstar Rivaldo, however, still firmly believes the 32-year-old has enjoyed a better calendar year individually than his rivals.
"In my opinion, the Ballon d'Or of this season is Messi for what he has done," he said, according to Betfair.
"He didn't win the Champions League, but because it is an individual prize. He scored a lot of goals, important goals."
Messi has scored 21 goals in 19 matches for Barca so far in 2019, and finished the previous season with 51 goals and 22 assists in 50 games for his club.
