With Barcelona set to take on Juventus next month, the Catalan club is hoping to announce a new contract for Lionel Messi in order for the Argentine to reunite with his longstanding rival Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch.
According to Sport, the Blaugrana are racing to secure the 34-year-old's signature before their meeting with Juventus in the annual Joan Gamper Trophy on 8 August.
Messi has reportedly indicated that he will sign a new contract in Spain following the expiration of his previous deal last month, but cannot officially do so until the club drastically reduces its wage bill.
Barca are said to be hoping to get the deal over the line before their friendly against Massimiliano Allegri's Juve next month, with it being suggested that they want him to feature in that clash in a reigniting of his rivalry with Ronaldo.
Messi, it has been claimed, will return to training on 2 August even if he has not penned a new contract by then.
The six-time Ballon d'Or winner is currently on holiday with his family following his triumph with Argentina at the 2021 Copa America, for which he was also named the Player of the Tournament.
