One of FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi's former teammates believes the Argentine could very well play at the highest level until he is 40 years old.
In his younger days, the Argentine was deployed as a marauding inside forward who would relentlessly run at opposition defences, but as he has got older, he has played a more calculated game.
Xavi Hernandez, who spent many seasons playing alongside the five-time Ballon d'Or winner, believes the 31-year-old has the capabilities to go on for another decade, especially if he plays in a deeper role.
"Sometimes, I think that he (Messi) can play until he is 38, 39 or 40. He needs very little to be able to do that," he told Catalunya Radio.
"What do you lose as you get older? Your pace? Well, he won't lose his mental speed. Messi is incomparable.
"I think that he would be able to play wherever he wants on the park.
"He already drifts into the centre of the field and is effective there, as he is at defending, too, because he is very strong mentally."
Despite being known for the many goals he has scored over the years, Messi has also assisted 220 strikes in his senior Barca career.
