FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has made a big admission about the 2018 Ballon d'Or prize, which he was placed fifth for despite scoring more goals than anyone else in this calendar year.
The Argentine has scored 51 goals for club and country this year, more than any other player who plays in Europe's top five leagues.
Many were shocked to see Messi finish fifth in the standings for the latest instalment of the Ballon d'Or, which Luka Modric won, but the 31-year-old has now admitted he never thought he would win the accolade.
"If I'm honest, I don't give much importance to it although it is a big prize," he told Marca.
"I knew this season I didn't have the chance to win it and I wasn't surprised."
Messi has been in incredible form for Barca so far this season, scoring 21 goals and assisting a further 13 strikes in 20 matches across all competitions.
