Messi, who is the top-scorer across Europe's top five leagues with 25 La Liga goals in 24 appearances this season, is poised to grab another historic milestone for the Blaugrana, should the Argentine be handed a starting berth in his side's La Liga clash against Rayo Vallecano over the weekend.
As things stand, the 31-year-old has amassed a total of 442 appearances in Spain's top-flight, putting him in joint second-spot along with Andres Iniesta, who joined Japanese outfit Vissel Kobe on a three-year contract in July 2018.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner went level on appearances with Iniesta after featuring in his side's 1-0 La Liga El Clasico victory at the Santiago Bernabeu.
With Messi poised to surpass Iniesta's record over the weekend, the Argentine superstar is not too far behind the all-time record held by Xavi, with the 2010 FIFA World Cup winner having made 63 appearances more than Messi in La Liga.
Messi still has a long way to go before reaching Xavi and Iniesta's number of appearances for the club in all competitions, with Xavi and Iniesta having made a staggering 769 and 674 appearances, dwarfing Messi's current 442 caps for the Spanish giants.
