The Argentine netted four strikes in his side's 6-1 thumping of Eibar on Tuesday night, taking his tally for the current campaign to 12 goals in eight appearances.
Overall, he has now scored 519 times in 591 appearances for the Blaugrana, and Tuesday's performance saw him overtake the career tally of Jimmy Jones, who struck 517 goals for Northern Ireland side Glenavon in the 1950s, as stated by The Guardian in an article from April 2017, when Messi reached 500 goals for Barcelona.
However, Messi still sits 124 strikes behind the best one-club goalscorer in history – the famous Pele, who scored 643 goals for Santos.
German legend Gerd Muller sits 47 goals above Messi, having netted 566 times for Bayern Munich, while the Argentine only needs another 25 strikes to climb into the third spot. Sporting Lisbon legend Fernando Peyroteo finished his career on 534 goals for the Portuguese giants, and Messi could match his tally this season.
Josef Bican (534 goals for Slavia Prague), Jimmy McGrory (522 goals for Celtic), and Uwe Seeler (507 goals for Hamburg) are the other names on the list.
