Neymar revealed that Lionel Messi is his best friend and it has become clear that they’re close relationship is paying off on the pitch.
The Brazilian star revealed on Tuesday that Messi has become his best friend both off and on the pitch.
However, this has not always been the case and Messi initially treated Neymar with suspicion due to his disagreements with Sandro Rosell. Messi thought that Neymar was brought in to dethrone him at the club and, as a result they struggled to combine on the pitch in the 2013/14 season.
However, Barcelona backroom staff members, Pepe Costa and his son Alvaro have helped to bridge the gap between the two South Americans. Pepe, who’s a close confidant of Messi’s. Alvaro, on the other hand became close with Neymar due to his affiliation with Nike.
With Pepe being Alvaro’s father, it was only a matter of time before the two stars worked out their differences.
This season, there has been a clear chemistry between the two, and the statistics agree.
Messi has 37 goals this season, while Neymar has 24. The 61 goals between them have accounted for more than a few points. In the loss to Malaga on Saturday, Barcelona struggled in attack largely because Messi and Neymar had difficulty combining. This was due to the way Malaga’s defence isolated them. Now, all that remains for Luis Enrique and Barcelona is to bring Luis Suarez into the mix of this South American partnership, and fans may forget about how Real Madrid’s ‘BBC’ outplayed them in 2014.
