After Lionel Messi's father released a statement saying his son is free to leave FC Barcelona, LaLiga responded in just minutes.
On Friday afternoon, the 33-year-old's father Jorge Messi, who is also his agent, released a statement taking aim at LaLiga, insisting that Messi does not have a buyout clause and that he is therefore able to leave Barca for free.
This comes just days after LaLiga backed Barcelona's stance that the six-time Ballon d'Or winner's contract only expires in 2021, and that the window in which he could have cancelled his contract has passed.
Now, LaLiga have yet again had their say, releasing a statement in reply to Jorge Messi to further insist that their interpretation of Messi's contract has not changed.
"Their reply (Messi's representatives) makes clear that their interpretation is out of context and distant from what the contract literally says," LaLiga wrote in Spanish, as translated by The Athletic journalist Dermot Corrigan.
