With the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane all vying for the 2019 Ballon d'Or award, Brazil legend Kaka has revealed which player he thinks should be named as Luka Modric's heir to the throne.
The former AC Milan superstar is no stranger to the Ballon d'Or, having won it himself in 2007 before Ronaldo and Messi's decade-long dominance of the award began.
Real Madrid midfielder and Croatia international Modric pipped the five-time Ballon d'Or-winning duo to the title last year, largely due to his heroics at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
When discussing worthy candidates for this year's prized individual title, Kaka singled out Liverpool and Netherlands defender Virgil van Dijk.
"We will see what happens in the future," he told Sky Italia
"Would I give the Ballon d'Or to Virgil van Dijk? I had some discussions talking about it with friends and with my brother and the name we chose is really his.
"He had a great season in the Premier League and won the Champions League playing in a crazy way.
"We'll see what the judges will decide, but it's time to reward a defender."
In addition to winning the UEFA Champions League title with the Reds, the Dutch defender was also named the 2019 Premier League Player of the Year.
The Netherlands skipper could add the UEFA Nations League title to his trophy haul after the Oranje saw off England to book a spot in the final against Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal on 9 June.
