Having previously dubbed Lionel Messi the "God of Football", former Manchester United and Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has explained why he thinks the FC Barcelona superstar should not be crowned the 2019 Ballon d'Or winner.
Los Blancos midfielder Luka Modric ended Messi and arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo's stranglehold of the prestigious accolade in 2018, when he became the first player other than the Argentine or the Portuguese since 2007 to win the title of the world's best footballer.
Two-time UEFA Champions League-winning boss Mourinho was previously of the opinion the Blaugrana skipper should be awarded his sixth Ballon d'Or title, but with the Spanish giants' chances of clinching a treble having since been ended by Liverpool in their elimination from the UCL, the former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss has seemingly made a U-turn on his sentiments.
"I have doubts that he (Messi) deserves the Ballon d'Or this year because he failed in the Champions League," Mourinho told RMC Sport.
Messi, who is currently the leading goalscorer across Europe's top five leagues, has scored 50 goals in 49 games across all competitions for Barca this season, and will be hoping to pip arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo to a record sixth Ballon d'Or title – the Argentine has not won the award since 2015.
