Jorge Sampaoli: Lionel Messi The Only Starter In Argentina Squad
Argentina manager Jorge Sampaoli has revealed that FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is the only guaranteed starter for the Albiceleste.
Argentina will take on Uruguay and Venezuela in 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September, and two wins will be of great importance to Sampaoli's side.
The tactician, who took over from Edgardo Bauza in June, has admitted that Messi is the only player guaranteed to start in his side, suggesting he has a clear plan for the 30-year-old.
"I was fortunate enough to take over the national team with Leo's suspension lifted," Sampaoli told Golazo Argentino.
"The only starter is Messi, the rest of the squad will be evaluated.
"Against Uruguay, Leo is going to play where he plays best; in the centre, or coming in from the right. We have good communication with Messi, sending messages constantly, and we talk about his position on the pitch.
"You have to give him the tools. Isolating Leo is a mistake for me, you have to surround him with very good players."
Messi has scored 18 World Cup qualifier goals and assisted a further 11 strikes in 41 matches.
