Lingard Explains Why He Did Ronaldo's Celebration

After scoring in England's win over Andorra in their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Sunday evening, Jesse Lingard has revealed why he did a version of Cristiano Ronaldo's famous goal celebration during the match.

The Manchester United midfielder scored a brace in his country's 4-0 victory on the weekend in his second appearance for the Three Lions in this international break.

Following his first strike in the match, Lingard fused his own trademark celebration with Ronaldo's iconic jump and "Siu!", and explained after the game that it was a "welcoming gift" for the Red Devils' latest signing.

"Me and Mason (Mount) were thinking about celebrations this week and obviously we mixed my celebration with Cristiano's, and I said I'd do it if I scored," he told beIN Sports.

"It's a little welcoming gift for him. He'll settle in very quickly and it will help the team tremendously this season."

Ronaldo completed a return to the 20-time English champions last week, 12 years after leaving the club to join Spanish giants Real Madrid. In Spain, he scored 450 goals in 438 games across all competitions, before later netting more than 100 times for Juventus.

What role will Lingard play this season?

The 28-year-old decided he would remain at his boyhood club in this past window despite reportedly having the chance of secure regular first-team football elsewhere, which he might not be promised by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Lingard has played just four minutes out of a possible 270 for United so far this season after returning from a half-a-season loan spell at West Ham United, where he struck nine times in 16 appearances.
