'It's Useless To Compare Lionel Messi With Diego Maradona'
Lionel Messi is often compared to Diego Maradona who, unlike the FC Barcelona superstar, has lifted a World Cup trophy, but another Argentina legend has insisted it is "useless" to compare them.
Former Chelsea and Parma striker Hernan Crespo, who scored 35 goals in 64 games for the Albiceleste, appears to be tired of the debate and explained why he thinks people should stop with the comparisons of his two countrymen.
"It's useless to compare them because we just need to enjoy it," he told AS.
"(Diego) Maradona and (Lionel) Messi are both Argentinian, and it is incredible that they have had such a huge impact on football history. It is obvious that the social impact Maradona had will never be seen again.
"It's not just about winning trophies. Regarding Messi, his impact has been in terms of football itself, there is a 'before' and 'after' Messi.
"So why should we compare them? We just need to enjoy them."
Messi has had a lot more success at club level, having lifted 30 trophies with FC Barcelona so far, while Maradona won only eight titles during his club career, but famously guided Argentina to their 1986 FIFA World Cup triumph.
