'It's Useless To Compare Lionel Messi With Diego Maradona'

Lionel Messi is often compared to Diego Maradona who, unlike the FC Barcelona superstar, has lifted a World Cup trophy, but another Argentina legend has insisted it is "useless" to compare them.

Former Chelsea and Parma striker Hernan Crespo, who scored 35 goals in 64 games for the Albiceleste, appears to be tired of the debate and explained why he thinks people should stop with the comparisons of his two countrymen.

"It's useless to compare them because we just need to enjoy it," he told AS.

"(Diego) Maradona and (Lionel) Messi are both Argentinian, and it is incredible that they have had such a huge impact on football history. It is obvious that the social impact Maradona had will never be seen again.

"It's not just about winning trophies. Regarding Messi, his impact has been in terms of football itself, there is a 'before' and 'after' Messi.

"So why should we compare them? We just need to enjoy them."

Messi has had a lot more success at club level, having lifted 30 trophies with FC Barcelona so far, while Maradona won only eight titles during his club career, but famously guided Argentina to their 1986 FIFA World Cup triumph.

Do you think it's fair to compare Messi to Maradona? If so, who do you regard as the better player? Have your say in the comments section below.

In Spain they love and adore him but in Argentina they hate him. Even leader know when it's time to giveup. From a distance there is no Argetina without him. Maradona had people around him who would die on the field like him. Messi has himself to do everything. It pains to see him like this. Ronald only focuses on scoring because Portugal can defend, Spain plays as a unit. Brasil deosn't lack anywhere. People should question other players commitment to Argentina not what Messi deos. To me he was helpless n could do nothing to help his team and now journalist harmer him for that or maybe they are trying so hard to colour him bad
