A young starlet, who left FC Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain in July, has opened up on his decision to leave the Catalan club despite the possibility of playing alongside superstar Lionel Messi.
Xavi Simons, a 16-year-old midfield talent who came through the ranks at Barca's famous La Masia academy, shocked many when he signed for the French giants three months ago.
He has admitted that while it is a dream for many to share a field with the club's record goalscorer and greatest player in its history, he felt he had to walk a different path.
"Messi is the best player in the world, of course," Simons told NOS.
"Everyone dreams about playing with him, but sometimes you have to choose another way.
"I decided to begin a new adventure and I think that's good for my development.
"If you are young, you really enjoy it. Barcelona is very big, but you don't realise it when you're so young.
"You always have to be yourself and act normally. I think I did that. I'm a very calm guy, but that changes when I'm on the pitch. Then I become a player with a lot of character."
Simons spent nine years at Barca, captaining various sides throughout his development years.
