Neymar has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid this season, but the Brazilian superstar could already have been a Los Blancos player were it not for the intervention of a former club president.

The Paris Saint-Germain star has made it clear he is hoping to leave the Parisians in this window, and has been linked with a move to Real as well as his former club Barcelona.
However, it has now been claimed that the 27-year-old could have joined the Madrid giants back in 2006, seven years before he joined Barca, but was prevented from doing so by former Santos chairman Marcelo Teixeira.
In an interview with AS, Teixeira explained that he prevented the deal from happening after Neymar had undergone a successful trial in Spain.
"He (Neymar) was blown away by the Galacticos but we were able to get hold of his father in time and make him an offer that earned him a $1 million (R15 million)," Teixeira revealed.
"He quickly accepted (and) my whole board of directors told me I was out of my mind, but we all knew Neymar was something special.
"Keeping him was essential to Santos, and to what the side went on to achieve with him at the centre of it. It was a difficult decision that I had to make on my own, but it was what had to be done at that moment in time."
Neymar went on to score 70 goals in 134 appearances for Santos, before leaving to join Barcelona in 2013 for a reported figure of €86.2 million (R1.4 billion).
