The Argentine seemed helpless to drive his team against the on-fire Bundesliga champions as Bayern thrashed Barcelona 8-2.
The embarrassing loss is the third consecutive humiliating Champions League exit following the 3-0 defeat at AS Roma in 2017/18 and the 4-0 at Liverpool last season.
Bayern were already leading 4-1 at half-time and Messi cut a dejected figure inside the dressing room, as shown by a video that emerged on social media.
After the final whistle Messi also could not hide his frustration, with reports claiming he wants drastic changes at the club or else he could leave when his contract expires.
The 33-year-old is absolutely fed up with the powers at Camp Nou and wants coach Quique Setien to be sacked and president Josep Maria Bartomeu to resign.
Meanwhile, former Real Madrid midfielder Steve McManaman slammed the Catalan captain for his attitude during the club’s biggest defeat in European history.
"He’s a magician, he’s brilliant, he’s arguably the greatest player ever,” McManaman said on BT Sport.
"But he has to work harder, especially on nights like this when they are getting absolutely battered.
"He just gave in before, Alaba just ran off him he never even wanted, he only had to run five yards, and he never wanted to run at all."
The Champions League defeat ensured that Barcelona have gone trophyless for the first time in 12 years. The last time the Spanish side ended a campaign without silverware was in 2007/08.
