With the Spanish giants in a dire economic situation following the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, possibly the only way for Koeman to improve his side might be to bring in players who could soon become available for free.
Reports suggest that Manchester City's Eric Garcia already has an agreement to join the LaLiga outfit, whom he represented as a youth player until he moved to England in 2017.
The 20-year-old central defender, who has not played much this season after deciding to run his contract down, has been a regular starter under Luis Enrique in the Spain set-up, and is considered one of the best young defenders in the world.
With his expected arrival, Koeman could look to continue with his 3-4-2-1 formation that has been effective of late, with Garcia playing as a right-sided centre-back and Gerard Pique to his left.
Barcelona are also reportedly interested in Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, whose contract with the Reds is set to expire in June. The Dutchman, who played under Koeman for the Netherlands, could be used in a two-man central midfield, alongside Blaugrana legend Sergio Busquets.
Further forward, Olympique Lyon star Memphis Depay could partner Messi in playing behind the striker, who might very well be City icon Sergio Aguero, who recently announced that he will leave the Citizens when his deal with the club ends this year.
These four signings could give Koeman the competition for places he is after in Spain, although their potential arrivals might ruffle a few feathers, especially those of the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele, who would perhaps spend more time on the bench than they have this season.
