According to ESPN, Messi and his father have ended contract negotiations with the Catalan giants as the Argentine forward is said to be unhappy with the problems at the club and the constant leaks.
English publication the Mirror have listed five possible destinations for the 33-year-old, should he decided to leave.
On that list, Manchester City, Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Newell's Old Boys and inter Miami could be the sides interested.
Inter, meanwhile, did activate Messi's £132million release clause back in 2006, but the player wanted to remain in Spain.
While Man City and PSG have the financial muscle to take on a player of Messi's stature, Newell's Old Boys vice-president Cristian D'Amico claimed the deal wouldn't impossible.
"I don't know if it's impossible," he told TNT Sports.
"It's a decision exclusively made by him and his family. We have to have the best possible context to help make a decision.
"When (Diego) Maradona came to Newell's, nobody thought that he would come either. I hope to do something similar with Leo.
"Obviously, that's not to be selling smoke. It's a difficult topic.
"What Newell's fan would not dream to see the best player in the world with the jersey of their team on? Time might allow such things, you have to be calm."
Messi revealed last year that he was closest to leaving in 2013 and 2014 due to off-field issues, with some reports claiming it was down to the alleged tax evasion.
