The FC Barcelona superstar watched from the sidelines as Mbappe tried to make up the four-goal gap in Paris Saint-Germain's final Ligue 1 game of the season.
With the 2018/19 LaLiga campaign already completed, Messi was not able to add to his tally of 36 strikes, which equates to 72 points in the official Golden Shoe ranking.
Mbappe, though, only scored once in PSG's 3-1 defeat to Reims, and, although he finished his campaign as the top goalscorer in France with 33 strikes, he was not not able to catch Messi.
As a consequence, Messi claimed his third successive Golden Shoe, and also became the first player to lift the prize six times overall.
Fabio Quagliarella completed the podium with 26 goals in Serie A, followed by Atalanta's Duvan Zapata, who netted 23 times.
Meanwhile, Messi's longstanding rival Ronaldo, who has won the Golden Shoe four times, did not make the top 10 this season after finishing his debut Serie A campaign with 21 strikes.
