The Blaugrana are keen for their captain to extend his contract, which expires in June, and are weighing up special measures.
After it has been claimed that one of the presidential candidates was even proposing to buy a Major League Soccer club, where Messi could go after another two years at Barcelona, it has now been claimed the Catalan giants could lure Sergio Aguero, one of Messi’s closest friends, to Spain.
Check out where Messi ranks among the greatest playmakers of the last decade:
Aguero, like Messi, is out of contract at the end of June and could be signed as a free agent, which would be beneficial for Barca’s stretched finances.
Despite his injury troubles, the 32-year-old still has much to offer, but perhaps the biggest incentive for Barcelona to sign him is his friendship with Messi, Marca report.
The duo often share rooms when on national team duty with Argentina, with their friendship dating back to the 2005 U20 FIFA World Cup, which they won with their national side.

However, Barcelona are not the only interested side, with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly also monitoring his situation.
The forward joined City in 2011 and has since scored 256 goals and assisted another 73 in 379 appearances for the Premier League side, helping them lift 13 trophies.
