Neymar Hunts Pele’s Goal-Record

FC Barcelona star, Neymar, is on the hunt for Pele’s all-time scoring record for Brazil after scoring a quadruple to single-handedly down Japan 4-0.

The four goals boosted Neymar’s overall tally for the Selecao to 40 goals in 58 games and moved him into fifth spot of Brazil’s all-time scoring ranks.

At only 22, he has already surpassed Brazil legends like Ronaldinho (33), Rivaldo (34) and Bebeto (39). Only Pele (77), Ronaldo (62), Romario (55) and Zico (48) have scored more.

The Brazil wonder-kid has Pele’s goal-scoring record in sight. Pele had reached his first 40 goals for the Selecao aged 22 years and 189 days, while Neymar’s four goals against Japan came at the age of 22 years and 251 days.

It was the fourth time in Neymar’s career that he has scored four goals in a game, but the first time on national team duty, while the other three quadruples happened during his time at Santos.

In addition, it was his 14th career hat trick after scoring nine for Santos, three for Brazil and two for Barcelona.

Neymar has also assisted 23 goals in his 58 games for Brazil, which means he is involved in more than one goal per game when putting on the Selecao shirt.
