Both Mohamed Salah and Cristiano Ronaldo failed to score in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday, which means superstar Lionel Messi has officially ended the 2017/18 season as the top goalscorer across Europe's top five leagues.

On 44 goals each heading into the final in Kyiv this weekend, Ronaldo and Salah had the chance to draw level or overtake Messi as the top scorer in Europe's top five leagues this season. However, neither player was able to find the net, which means Messi is out on his own on 45 strikes across all competitions in 2017/18, a tally he reached in 54 games.

Fourth on the list is Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski with 41 goals for the campaign, along with Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane and Lazio's Italian star Ciro Immobile, who both scored the same number of strikes.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani struck 40 times across all formats for his side, which sees him follow the aforementioned trio in seventh place.

Messi's attacking partner Luis Suarez follows his countryman on 31 goals for the season, a tally matched by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who changed clubs halfway through the campaign.

The African forward found the back of the net on 21 occasions for BVB before his move in January to Arsenal, where he struck 10 times in the second half of 2017/18.
