It is claimed that FC Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu will ask Lionel Messi, whom he already does not have a good relationship with, to take a wage cut for the 2020/21 season.
What Angry Messi Told Opponent In Game
The Argentine ended his controversial transfer saga by revealing that he is staying at the club against his will, insisting that he did not want to take his boyhood club to court.
In his tell-all interview, Messi said Bartomeu went against his word at the end of the season after promising the six-time Ballon d'Or winner that he would be able to leave for free at the end of the previous campaign.
The 33-year-old, however, did not get his wish, and things might get more uncomfortable for the captain, who will reportedly be asked by the club's president to lower his wages for the upcoming season.
Cuatro reports that, due to the financial impact of the coronavirus, Bartomeu will ask the forward in a face-to-face meeting to accept a salary cut in the hopes that he leads by example, which could then lead to others accepting a similar proposal from the club's board.
Reports suggest that Messi earns about £988 000 (R21 million) a week before deductions, which makes him the best-paid player in world football.
