A former FC Barcelona teammate thinks he knows why Lionel Messi struggles to put in the same performances he does at club level for his country.
Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has known the five-time Ballon d’Or winner since childhood, as he played alongside the Argentine at the La Masia academy and at senior level at the Camp Nou.
The Blues star believes the reason, why Messi struggles for his country, is because he does not have the same quality around him that he does at the Camp Nou.
“I think so (the pressure is different to Barcelona), I think so,” the Chelsea ace said on BBC One.
“He feels it, he thinks that more people are expecting much more from him than what’s required at Barcelona.
“At Barcelona, I think. The quality is higher.
“So here (at Argentina), they expect he needs to score three goals every single game as he does for Barcelona.
“I am sorry, but football is not that simple. As much as he is the best, it is difficult.”
Argentina drew their opening game in Group D to Iceland and then followed that up with a 3-0 defeat to Croatia on Thursday night.
