Messi finished the latest LaLiga campaign with 36 strikes, which equates to 72 points in the Golden Shoe ranking.
He has already secured the Pichichi trophy for the top goalscorer in Spain a record-equalling sixth time, and could also still end up as Europe's top marksman overall.
The only player who can stop the FC Barcelona captain from lifting his sixth Golden Shoe is Mbappe, although the Paris Saint-Germain star's chances of doing so are quite slim.
Mbappe took his tally to 32 Ligue 1 goals after scoring a brace last weekend, but he will need to net four goals against Reims in PSG's final league game of the 2018/19 campaign in order to draw level with Messi, while five strikes would see him lift the trophy alone.
It sounds nearly impossible, but Mbappe did manage to score four times in Les Parisiens' 5-0 win over Olympique Lyon earlier in the campaign.
The race for the last spot on the podium is still ongoing, although Fabio Quagliarella seems to have wrapped up third spot in the Golden Shoe race.
He currently sits on 26 strikes, which equates to 52 points, seven points more than fourth-placed Mbaye Diagne. The Galatasaray forward has netted 30 goals in the Super Lig this campaign, but – unlike goals scored in Europe's top five leagues – his strikes only have a 1.5 multiplier so he currently sits on 45 points.

Meanwhile, Lille's Nicolas Pepe, Atalanta's Duvan Zapata and AC Milan striker Krzysztof Piatek follow with 22 goals each so far this season, and all of them have one more chance to add to their tallies.
Cristiano Ronaldo currently sits outside the top 10 after finding the back of the net on 21 occasions in his debut campaign in Italy, but still has one final Serie A game of the 2018/19 campaign to play.
