Simeone Clarifies His Messi-Ronaldo Comments

Diego Simeone Clarifies His Lionel Messi-Cristiano Ronaldo Comments

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has finally cleared the air on his leaked audio messages about Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo during the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Real Star: What Makes Messi So Different From Ronaldo

Following Ronaldo's hat-trick against Spain in Portugal's opening game of the World Cup in Russia, and Messi's missed penalty against Iceland in Argentina's first match at the tournament, an audio message from Simeone found its way to the press.

At the time, it was reported that he said: "Messi is very good, but he's very good because he's accompanied by fantastic players (at Barca). If you had to choose between Messi and Ronaldo for an average team, who would you go for?"

The Atleti boss has now discussed that message, stating that it was taken out of context, and reaffirmed that he still believes Messi is the best player in world football.

"I'd always choose Messi (over Ronaldo), without a doubt," he said at a recent press conference, according to the Daily Star.

"When I said what I did about Messi and Ronaldo, I wasn't talking about who is the best player in the world. I was saying that, in a team of average players, Ronaldo would probably be a better fit.

"But, when surrounded by top players, Messi is the best in the world."

'Barca Must Give Us Messi!'

Both Ronaldo and Messi, along with their respective nations, went on to get knocked out in the round of 16 at the World Cup.

Hayibo!! I do not understand the reasoning of Coach Simeone. He clearly prefers Ronaldo over Messi but for other reasons than the confusion he feeds himself and the try to convince us that he understands himself. Guess he also was tempted to mock Messi's poor showing at the Russia FWC2018 and gloat about Ronaldo's hot form. The fact that he is trying to justify himself suggests he is still uncertain whether he said the right thing.

@lwadzi... Ronaldo as well is being playing among good players even since Manchester days (Rooney, Giggs, Scholes etc.At MAdrid, Benzema, Modric, Bale etc, these are way better players. Its just that they were not competitive enough to be on the Ballon d'or...

Messi is gud with world class players but cr7 is phenomenal with stars and average players... Among cr7 teammates none has ever been among the 3 balon d'or finalist while as 4 messi there's many.... 2 sum this up messi has always been surrounded by better players compared to ronaldo yet ronaldo has managed 2 outshine him esp in the last 4 years
