The Blaugrana forward is often compared to Maradona when it comes to his performances for the Albiceleste, with many believing that, in order for him to match up to his predecessor, he needs to win silverware with his country.

Maradona has now revealed what advice he would give the 30-year-old ahead of the showpiece in Russia, and insisted Messi does not need to prove himself to anyone.

"I would advise Messi to keep playing, to enjoy the game," he told Omnisport.

"He has to forget about the critics, if he can win the World Cup or not.

"He doesn't have to demonstrate anything. He has to enjoy the game on the field."

Lest we forget that even Maradona needed a handball goal to win the world cup in 1986. And Messi is too honest a player to attempt such.
