Portugal finished second in their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification group, meaning the 36-year-old and his international colleagues will need to win two play-off games to cement a spot in the competition later this year.
A Selecao were defeated 2-1 by Serbia in their final qualifying match, which saw them finish three points behind the south-east European country.
United midfielder Fred, who is likely to be named in Brazil's squad for the tournament in Qatar, has now revealed that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was massively hurt by his country's failure to book a place at the World Cup directly.
"We talk a little bit about this. Of course, he's very upset about not qualifying directly for the World Cup," Fred told Eurosport.
"But, as a great player and as their captain, he knows how to prepare his teammates in order to qualify. Obviously, he was very upset but he will work hard to be at the World Cup.
"Everybody knows that he wants to win everything, every time. So rest assured he will work hard to be at this World Cup."
Ronaldo has appeared at four World Cups for Portugal to date, with his debut coming in 2006, a tournament in which he and his teammates were sent packing at the semi-final stage following a defeat to France.
