A former FC Barcelona star and Ballon d'Or runner-up has insisted that no comparison can be made between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, claiming the Argentine superstar 'is one a different level to everybody else'.
Gary Lineker, who is England's third all-time top scorer with 48 goals in 80 appearances, had his say on which player can be considered greater between Messi and Ronaldo.
With both men being awarded five Ballon d'Or titles each since 2008, Lineker, explained why he prefers Messi and feels there is no comparison.
"He’s just phenomenal. He’s 31 now and he’s still going strong," he was quoted as saying on talkSport.
"He plays the game in a way the rest of us are not familiar with.
"I watch a lot of football, and people pine on this whole Messi vs Ronaldo debate; there’s no comparison for me.
"They watch a bit of English football and they think La Liga is a walk in the park.
"But they actually win most competitions going, domestically and in Europe. Messi is on a different level to everybody else, it’s as simple as that.
"People say to me what about Ronaldo’s goalscoring record and so forth. But I say to them have you seen Messi pass a football? Have you seen him dribble towards goal?
"The all-round joy he brings to football is what I love about him. Even on his off-days he’ll do three or four things that take your breath away.
"He also scores goals as well – I think some people forget that! He’s such a great team player, too. Any team who has him in their side will have a great chance of winning it – that’s for sure."
Since making his professional debut, Ronaldo has netted the most goals in the history of the UEFA Champions League with 121, while one-club man Messi, is responsible for scoring the most goals for a single side in the history of the competition, having netted 106 times for Barcelona so far.
