New UEFA Best Player in Europe, Cristiano Ronaldo, has revealed he doesn’t have a ‘rivalry’ with Lionel Messi, just a professional relationship.
The Real Madrid star and his FC Barcelona counterpart are (arguably) currently the two best players in football and are continuously battling for club and individual honours.
“The rivalry is formed by the press,” he told Portuguese TV channel TVI.
“I have no rivalry with (Lionel) Messi. We face each other professionally and have a normal relationship.
“We're work friends, so to speak, and so, obviously, we don't have a relationship outside the world of football, just as we don't with a lot of other players.”
Ronaldo believes people cannot compare him with the Argentine, because of their different skillsets, but says he has gotten used to it since his time at Manchester United.
“You cannot please everyone, it is normal. I have to respect all opinions, my life does not depend on what people think,” he added.
“It's part of my life now. People are bound to compare us, like in Formula 1, they make comparisons between Ferrari and Mercedes.
“It's all part of this and I'm used to it, not only from living in Madrid all these years, it went on in Manchester before, so I know how to deal with it.”
