With many believing Lionel Messi is the frontrunner for this year's Ballon d'Or, Cristiano Ronaldo has commented on his chances of lifting his sixth Golden Ball after winning his second international trophy with Portugal.
The Portugal captain helped A Selecao lift the UEFA Nations League title on Sunday after they beat the Netherlands 1-0 in the final.
Although Ronaldo had a relatively quiet game in the decider, his hat-trick in Portugal's 3-1 semi-final victory over Switzerland booked his country only their third final in history.
With the Nations League triumph, the 34-year-old took his trophy tally in 2018/19 to three, having already claimed the Serie A and Supercoppa Italiana titles with Juventus.
"I've won three trophies, I've played well, what more could I do?" he answered, as quoted by Marca, when asked about his Ballon d'Or chances after the final on Sunday.
"Do I deserve it? I don't know, I'm going to leave that with you. You are the ones that have to judge, I'm not going to assess myself."
However, many still believe Messi had a better season than the Portuguese after netting 51 goals and assisting another 22 strikes for FC Barcelona in 2018/19 in comparison to Ronaldo's 28 goals and 13 assists for Juventus.
The Argentine's 36 LaLiga goals saw him secure his sixth European Golden Shoe, but he lifted one less trophy than Ronaldo did so far. He added another league title as well as the Supercopa de Espana to his medal collection, and could potentially win the 2019 Copa America with Argentina.
Others who are among the Ballon d'Or favourites include Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk, while his teammates Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah could strengthen their chances should they win the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
