Ronaldo scored his 95th goal for Portugal during the recent international break, leaving him just 14 strikes shy of Ali Daei's world record.
The Iranian retired with 109 international goals, a milestone no other player has reached in football, but Ronaldo is now well within its reach.
"Seen like that, it could be a goal because I'm not so far from the top, but it can't be an obsession," he told France Football.
"Everything I had in my life came naturally. I mean, that was the result of my efforts, not the goal."
The 34-year-old also insisted that he is getting used to his ageing body and knows he cannot play all the games if he wants to stay at the top of the game.
"If it were up to me, I would only play some important games," he added.
"Those of the national team and the Champions League. It's these kinds of meetings that emerge, those with a stake, a difficult environment, a pressure..."
Overall, Ronaldo has scored 701 career goals in official games, and only five players in history having officially scored more.
Josef Bican is the leading scorer for club and country having netted 805 goals, according to the Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation (RSSSF).
