Los Blancos' record goalscorer Ronaldo brought an end to his nine-year stay in Spain in July 2018, when he joined the Bianconeri in a deal worth €100 million (R1.6 billion).
The former Manchester United superstar's departure resulted in a considerable dip in form for the LaLiga giants, who finished the 2018/19 season without a single trophy.
Real president Perez has now dismissed claims that he was responsible for the 34-year-old's exit from the club, and heaped praise on the Portugal superstar in the process.
"I think he already had it quite clear that he wanted new challenges," Perez said on Onda Cero's El Transistor show.
"He used that moment to say it (after the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League final), but I think he'd been thinking about it for some time. He never created any problems during the nine years at Real Madrid, never once arriving late or anything.
"I think he's the best player I signed for Real Madrid. I always had a great relationship with him. We never had any problems, not even over money. We never talked about his (tax) debt."
Perez has enjoyed two fruitful spells as the club's president – the first was a six-year stint between 2000 and 2006, while the second began in 2009.
