Last season, Lionel Messi and FC Barcelona failed to win any of their six games against Atletico Madrid and ended up without silverware. Could Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid fall into a similar trap this season?
Ronaldo, as well as his teammates, were nowhere near their best when Los Blancos lost 4-0 to their cross-town rivals on Saturday.
The Portuguese had a bad day at the Vicente Calderon without a single shot on target, no successful dribbles and the worst pass accuracy of his side’s outfield players.
Ronaldo’s performance was somewhat similar to \Messi’s displays against Atletico last season.
The Argentine had failed to score in any of Barcelona’s six clashes with the Rojiblancos, which ultimately led to a season without silverware.
Barcelona were knocked out of the Champions League, lost the Spanish Supercopa on away goals (after two draws), and could not beat Diego Simeone’s side in the league.
In fact, they had the chance to clinch the title if they had beaten them in the last game of the season, but Messi and co failed to do so.
This season, Barcelona beat Atletico in all three encounters against them, knocking them out of the Copa del Rey and winning a La Liga clash.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, failed to come out victorious against their cross-town rivals. Similar to Barcelona, Ronaldo and co lost out on the Spanish Supercopa to Atletico at the beginning of the season.
In addition, the defending champions were knocked out of the Copa del Rey and lost both league encounters to Simeone’s side.
Unlike Messi, Ronaldo has at least scored two goals in the six encounters, but he could still not prevent the disappointing outcomes.
Yes, Los Blancos have already won the European Super Cup and the Club World Cup, but they would no doubt have been keen on a strong run in all competitions.
