After Cristiano Ronaldo wrote his name into the history books by clinching the inaugural UEFA Nations League title, Portugal's manager has tipped the Juventus superstar to compete at the highest level for "another three or four years".

A Selecao were crowned Nations League champions after running out 1-0 victors over the Netherlands on Sunday night.

Ronaldo completed his return to the national team fold after missing the group stage of the competition, and immediately repaid coach Fernando Santos' faith in him by netting a hat-trick in Portugal's semi-final win over Switzerland.

Despite failing to find the back of the net in the final against Ronald Koeman's side, Ronaldo walked away with the tournament's top goalscorer accolade for his three strikes in the campaign, in addition to notching up an impressive milestone with the Nations League title.

As such, he became the first player in the history of the game to lift 10 European trophies.

Prior to the clash against the Netherlands, Portugal boss Santos suggested that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner could feature at the 2022 FIFA World Cup for the European champions.

"I am not surprised at how he has played," he told the Evening Standard.

"I was surprised he was a great player at Sporting when he was 19 and also when he went to Manchester United, I lost him.

"But from that moment I could see his special qualities. He has proved from that moment that he has special qualities.

"He has proved himself on and off the pitch, and he can continue to play at the top level for another three or four years as he can play at the top level, has all these objectives and is determined.

"He is very fit. He trains to the limit. It is not normal to reach these performances but I think he will continue for a while.

"He is the captain. He is a hugely important player. I think he will continue to give people joy at club and international level."

Since making his international debut in 2003, Ronaldo has amassed 158 appearances for Portugal, scoring 88 goals along the way.
