Ronaldo Breaks La Liga All-Time Record

Cristiano Ronaldo, who was instrumental in his side's 3-2 comeback win on Sunday, broke a La Liga all-time record along the way, while Real Madrid equalled a 73-year-old milestone set by their bitter rivals.

The Portuguese netted Real's equaliser at Villarreal as his side came back from two goals behind to beat the Yellow Submarine 3-2 in a crucial away win.

Gareth Bale scored Los Blancos' opening goal, while Alvaro Morata netted his sixth goal off the bench to help Real climb back to the summit of La Liga after FC Barcelona had beaten Atletico Madrid 2-1 to move past their rivals earlier in the day.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, converted his 57th penalty since arriving in La Liga in 2009, and has now overtaken club legend Hugo Sanchez, who held the record for the most spot-kicks scored in the Spanish top flight.

The 32-year-old's strike against Villarreal was his 16th La Liga goal of the season, which means he now sits in third place in the Pichichi race, two shy of Luis Suarez, who has 18 league strikes to his name, and four behind Lionel Messi, who has netted 20 times so far.

It was not only Ronaldo who wrote his name in the record books this weekend – his club equalled a Spanish all-time record set by their bitter rivals FC Barcelona in 1944.

Zinedine Zidane's side have now gone 44 games without failing to score, equalling the longest streak in Spanish history, and will have a chance to become the sole record holders when they host Las Palmas on Wednesday.
