The Portuguese, who is experiencing his worst start to a La Liga campaign, scored a brace in his side's 6-0 thumping of APOEL on Tuesday night.
The two strikes took his tally for the 2017/18 European campaign to eight goals in five group stage games.
Overall, he has now netted an incredible 18 Champions League goals in 2017, breaking his own record of 16 from 2015.
Messi previously held the record in 2012, when he netted 13 Champions League goals in the calendar year, as pointed out by Bleacher Report.
Ronaldo has since bettered Messi’s record three, scoring 15 goals in 2013, 16 goals in 2015, and now 18 this year with one game to spare.
The 32-year-old will hope to carry his Champions League form into La Liga, where has scored just one goal in eight appearances so far after missing the first four games due to suspension.
