The Portuguese scored what was only his third and fourth La Liga goal of the current campaign against Sevilla, but, overall, he has now struck 51 times for club and country in 2017.
Ronaldo has scored 40 goals for Los Blancos in this calendar year, plus another 11 on national team duty for Portugal.
Messi, though, has two more and sits on 53 goals for club and country in 2017 so far – 49 for FC Barcelona and four with Argentina.
However, Ronaldo became the first player in history to score at least 50 goals in seven consecutive seasons, as Bleacher Report pointed out.
The 32-year-old sits on 51 this year, scored 55 in 2016, while hitting 57, 61, 69, 63 and 60, respectively, in the previous five years, according to messivsronaldo.net. The last time Ronaldo failed to hit 50 goals in a calendar year was in 2010, when he reached 48.
Messi, meanwhile, has found the back of the net 53 times in 2017, struck 59 in 2016, 52 in 2015, 58 in 2014 but failed to reach the 50-goal mark in 2013, when he finished the calendar year with 45 goals.
The Argentine, though, still holds the world record for the most goals in a calendar year, after scoring 91 times in 2012.
Ronaldo and Messi are two of four players who have reached the 50-goal mark in 2017, the others being Robert Lewandowski (51 goals) and Harry Kane (50 goals).
