Ronaldo 30, Messi 34

After securing the 30th trophy of his illustrious career on Saturday, Cristiano Ronaldo has further closed the gap on longstanding rival Lionel Messi when it comes to silverware.

The 34-year-old claimed his second title since joining the Italian giants in a transfer worth €100 million (R1.59 billion), plus add-ons, in July 2018.

After Juventus beat Fiorentina 2-1 on Saturday, the log leaders can not be overtaken by second-placed Napoli with just five games to be played in Serie A. As a consequence, Juve secured their eighth successive league title.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, has once again written his name in football's history books after becoming the first player to win the domestic league in Italy, Spain and England. It was already his second piece of silverware in Italy after lifting the Supercoppa Italiana with Juventus in January.

Overall, the Portuguese striker has now won 30 titles throughout his career. He claimed more than half of his titles at Real Madrid, winning 16 trophies in nine years at Santiago Bernabeu. His trophy haul at Madrid saw him lift four UEFA Champions Leagues, two La Liga titles, two Copa del Reys, two Spanish Super Cups, three FIFA Club World Cups and three UEFA European Super Cups.

Furthermore, he also won 10 trophies during his six-year stint with Manchester United – one Champions League, three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, two English League Cups, one FIFA Club World Cup and two FA Community Shields.

In addition, Ronaldo lifted the Portuguese Super Cup early in his career with Sporting, despite only sitting on the bench in 2002.

Messi, though, has claimed four trophies more than Ronaldo and could still add two more this season, with FC Barcelona still chasing the treble in 2018/19.

So far, the Argentine has won 10 La Liga titles, eight Supercopa de Espanas, six Copa del Reys, four Champions League trophies, three FIFA Club World Cups and three UEFA Super Cups.

The 31-year-old is yet to win a senior trophy with his national team, while Ronaldo won the 2016 UEFA European Championship with Portugal. Messi did win the U20 FIFA World Cup in 2005 as well as an Olympic gold medal in 2008, but both do not count as trophies in his senior career.

Both superstars can also still add a trophy with their national team in 2019. While Messi will be chasing the Copa America with Argentina, Ronaldo’s Portugal are one of the four finalists in the newly-formed UEFA Nations League.
