Barca Unhappy With Messi?

Two months after Lionel Messi's departure from Barcelona, the Spanish club's president has revealed what he would have liked the six-time Ballon d'Or winner to do after it became clear his salary expectations would not be met.

When the 34-year-old left the Catalan giants in August, president Joan Laporta insisted there was nothing that Messi nor the club could do to extend their 21-year relationship.

Due to financial issues, the Blaugrana were unable to sign the Argentine to a new deal, while reports at the time suggested that Messi would legally not have been able to play for the club for free.

European football expert Colin Millar claimed it would have been impossible since Spanish law requires "any new contract to be at least 50% of a player's previous wage".

In a recent interview, however, Laporta appeared to suggest that he would have appreciated it if Messi offered to continue at Barcelona for free, which he believes LaLiga would have allowed.

"There came a time when both parties saw that it would not be possible. There was disappointment on both sides," he told Catalan radio station RAC1.

"He wanted to stay but they also had a lot of pressure because of the offer they had. They knew if he didn't stay, he would go to PSG.

"I hoped Messi would do a U-turn and he would say he would play for free.

"I would have liked that and I would have been all for it. It is my understanding LaLiga would have accepted it. But we cannot ask a player of Messi's stature to do this."

On the coming weekend, an interview Messi has done with France Football is expected to be released, during which he reportedly discusses his Barcelona exit and subsequent arrival at Paris Saint-Germain.

Here is where Messi currently ranks among the leading club goalscorers in 2021:

In a teaser quote released by the publication this week, Messi insisted he "did not make a mistake" by joining the Ligue 1 giants.
