Lionel Messi is returning to fitness after picking up a groin strain against Villarreal, according to Barcelona.
The club released an official statement with regards to their superstar, explaining that a representative from the Argentinian National Team have evaluated the extent of his injury.
“The Argentina national team doctor, Daniel Martínez, and others from the FCB Medical Services have evaluated the groin strain sustained by Leo Messi during last weekend’s league fixture away to Villarreal,” the statement read.
“Both parties agreed that there have been considerable improvements, and the player will continue doing specific recovery exercises until he is ready to resume normal training with the rest of his team-mates.”
Messi missed out on his country’s 4-2 win over World Champions, Germany on Wednesday, but congratulated his team on the victory via social media.
"Well done to all my teammates in the Argentine national side on their victory over Germany in the first match of a new era under Tata (Gerardo Martino)," he posted on Facebook.
"I'm sorry I could be there with you this time. This is a very promising side and we're going to do great things in the future! #Come on Argentina."
Argentina beat Germany 4-2 in Dusseldorf in a match that Angel Di Maria put in a phenomenal performance, grabbing one goal and three assists. Messi will return to action when Barcelona take on Athletic Bilbao on September 13 at 16:00.
