The 33-year-old saw an initial yellow card changed to a straight red following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review on Sunday night after he appeared to strike Athletic Bilbao attacker Asier Villalibre in the face late in extra time.
Messi could now face a four-match suspension for his conduct, although this could rise to 12 games if the match official, Jesus Gil Manzano, describes the incident as a "serious offence", according to Article 98 of Spanish football's Disciplinary Code.
Marca, however, believe the six-time Ballon d'Or winner will face a suspension of no more than four matches.

Speaking after the match about Messi's apparent slap, Villalibre, who scored Bilbao's equaliser in injury time to take the game to extra time, briefly revealed his thoughts on what happened.
"It seemed to me a clear aggression from Messi," he told reporters, according to Rik Sharma, as per GiveMeSport.
