Argentina coach, Gerardo Martino remained tight-lipped on concerns about Lionel Messi’s fitness issues and rumours of the player forsaking his international duties for the remainder of 2014.
Speaking to the press on Wednesday, Martino confirmed that his team’s medical staff will assess the extent of Messi’s injuries but the former FC Barcelona coach avoided questions about the superstar’s commitment to the national team.
"After the match (against Germany), the team doctor will travel to Barcelona to meet with Leo and the Barcelona medical staff," he told the media as quoted by Marca.
"When you find yourself coaching someone like Leo, it's very difficult to steer clear of comments and rumours."
It has been rumoured that Messi will remain in Barcelona when Argentina play against Brazil and Hong Kong later this year to focus on his club commitments and work on returning to full fitness.
If Messi misses the friendly fixtures, the Argentinian team will lose a large portion of their commercial revenue, but Angel Di Maria’s return to the side will provide comfort, after the new Manchester United player scored a goal and made three assists in the 4-2 win over Germany last night.
Messi has scored 42 goals in 93 appearances for “La Albiceleste”.
