Following his record move to Arsenal, African star Nicolas Pepe has named FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi as his footballing idol.
On Thursday, Ivory Coast winger Pepe became the most expensive African player in history when he joined the Gunners from Lille for a reported fee of €80 million (R1.2 billion).
The 24-year-old is also Arsenal’s costliest signing ever, and will now test himself in a league many consider to be the most competitive in the world.
Speaking after he was announced as the London club's latest acquisition, Pepe was asked which footballer he admires the most.
"Lionel Messi," he told Arsenal.com.
"Because he is simply the best player in the world."
Pepe scored 22 goals in 38 Ligue 1 matches last season, with only Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe scoring more league goals in France's top flight than he did.
