The forward is among the greatest footballers to have ever played the game, after coming through the ranks at Sporting Lisbon in 2002. Following just a year in the Portuguese club's senior side, Ronaldo joined United, where he spent six seasons.
At Old Trafford, manager Sir Alex Ferguson perhaps showed favour to his young prodigy when he decided to let Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy leave the Red Devils for Real in 2006. The former Netherlands international and Ronaldo did not always get on in England, and there were reports the pair had many training ground fights.
Van Nistelrooy was later sold by Los Blancos just months after Ronaldo's then-world record transfer to the Spanish giants, leaving in January on a free transfer. It might be forgotten, but the Portuguese star scored most of goals in his debut campaign as a central striker, thus destabilising Van Nistelrooy's importance to the team.
In 2008, ex-Brazil forward Robinho was sold to Manchester City in the Premier League, a move that provided the Spanish giants a major cash injection ahead of their move for Ronaldo. The Brazilian also naturally attacked from the left side of attack, making it necessary for the club to let him go.
Dutch winger Arjen Robben made his way out of the Spanish capital in the same window Ronaldo arrived, while Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain was no longer seen as a key player in 2013 and was sold to Napoli.
Although Higuain's numbers for Los Blancos were good, Karim Benzema's relationship with Ronaldo on the field began to blossom and the Frenchman was seen as the player who could play to the Portuguese forward's strengths, sacrificing himself for the betterment of the team.
In 2018, it was Higuain who was forced out of Juventus upon the big-money arrival of Ronaldo under Massimiliano Allegri, although the former Real players do often share the pitch together under the management of Maurizio Sarri.
