The Albiceleste got off to a lively start in Peru, scoring just 17 minutes into the encounter through 22-year-old Stuttgart winger Nicolas Gonzalez, who was set up by Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.
Cleverly picked out in the box by the in-form Spurs star, Gonzalez took a touch before firing past goalkeeper Pedro Gallese to give Lionel Scaloni's men an early lead.
Messi and his colleagues continued to create goalscoring chances as the first half progressed, and, through Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez, found themselves two goals to the good 11 minutes after their first.
The former Racing Club forward made a run between Peru's centre-backs that was spotted by Leandro Paredes, who fed him the ball before he rounded the goalkeeper and calmly found the back of the net.
Argentina took a 2-0 lead into the half-time break but were unable to add to the scoreline, although Scaloni might not mind at this point. His side remains unbeaten in their four 2020 World Cup qualifiers, having won three of their four matches so far.
