The 36-year-old famously left Los Blancos for Juventus for a whopping €100 million (R1.75 billion) in 2018, dropping the transfer bombshell that he would leave straight after lifting the fifth UEFA Champions League trophy of his career.
It came as a shock to many Real fans after the Portuguese superstar had helped the Spanish giants claim 16 trophies, including four Champions League titles, during his nine years at the Santiago Bernabeu.
He left with the intention of securing another UCL title with Juve, but his dream was crushed by Ajax Amsterdam, Olympique Lyon and Porto in recent campaigns. As a consequence, Ronaldo is believed to be desperate for a return to Spain, and Real are said to be open to what would be one of the biggest reunions in football history.
Another player who celebrated a homecoming is Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The 39-year-old played for AC Milan between 2010 and 2012, helping them win the Serie A title as well as the Supercoppa Italiana.
He then rejoined the Rossoneri in December 2019 after his contract with LA Galaxy came to an end. The Sweden forward, who also came out of international retirement recently, has made it clear he wants to help Milan to get back to former glories, with the Italian club having won just one trophy over the past 10 years.
On the local scene, many football fans will remember John "Shoes" Moshoeu's famous second spell at Kaizer Chiefs. He first joined the club in 1993 but left after just 14 games.
However, he returned in 2003, aged 37, and helped Amakhosi win their first PSL title in 11 years during a trophy-laden three seasons with the club.
